THE 4 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF MONTESSORI
THE NATURAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHILD
The first fundamental principle of Montessori is respect for the natural development of the child . Here is what this means:
- Individual Rhythm: Each child has his or her own rhythm of development, and the Montessori method respects and supports this unique rhythm.
- Developmental Stages: Children go through different sensitive periods where they are more receptive to certain learnings. Montessori pedagogy adapts to these phases to promote optimal development.
- Freedom of Movement: Allowing children to move freely in their environment promotes motor development and exploration, key elements of Montessori pedagogy .
THE PREPARED ENVIRONMENT
The second principle of the Montessori method is the importance of the prepared environment . A well-organized setting plays an essential role in learning:
- Organization: A structured and orderly environment encourages children's autonomy by allowing them to easily find their way around and choose their activities.
- Montessori Materials: Educational materials are designed to be manipulated and encourage active learning. Children discover the world by experimenting directly with these sensory tools.
- Safety: A safe environment allows children to explore freely while promoting sensory and motor development .
- Adaptability: The environment must be able to evolve according to the changing needs of the child, thus promoting continuous and harmonious growth.
THE EDUCATOR AS GUIDE
The educator plays the role of a guide, accompanying each child in their learning journey. Here are the key aspects of this role:
- Observation: The educator carefully observes the child to identify his interests and needs, adjusting activities based on his discoveries.
- Non-Intervention: The educator only intervenes when necessary, leaving the child to learn by himself and develop his autonomy .
- Encouragement: The educator encourages the child in his efforts, thus strengthening his self-confidence and his desire to learn.
- Individualization: Each child is unique, and the educator adjusts his methods and approach to meet the specific needs of each.
SELF-EDUCATION
The last key principle of the Montessori method is the importance of self-education . This principle is based on the child's ability to learn independently:
- Autonomy: By allowing the child to take charge of their own learning, self-education develops their autonomy and their ability to take initiatives.
- Curiosity: Self-education nurtures children's natural curiosity, letting them explore and discover according to their own interests.
- Responsibility: The child learns to become responsible for his or her learning, reinforcing essential skills for his or her future life.
- Assessment: The child is able to self-assess, which strengthens his/her self-esteem and understanding of his/her own progress.
